VT Nuclear Services has acquired a wealth of experience in the monitoring of spent fuels to provide cooling time and burn up data.

Fuel monitoring systems designed and built by VT Nuclear Services have been successfully operated by major fuel reprocessing plants over many years, providing accurate measurements day after day on a 24-hour basis.

This operationally proven technology has been developed further with the introduction of our Spent Fuel Monitoring Service. This is based on High Resolution Gamma Spectroscopy within a modular configuration that easily adapts to wet or dry conditions for all commercial uranium oxide fuels.

The Spent Fuel Monitoring Service provides high integrity measurements that are fully independent of reactor operations data, with minimum impact on routine plant operation or involvement by plant personnel.

The service, which complies fully with the proposed methodologies for actinide only burn up credit, is carried out by experienced and specially trained VT Nuclear Services personnel and is available on a fixed price per assembly basis.

By using the Spent Fuel Monitoring Service, reprocessing plants can achieve significant cost savings in transport, storage and disposal operations through the application of an approved burn up credit methodology. This allows an increase in spent fuel packing densities, a reduction or elimination of expensive neutron absorbing material and a more efficient deployment of storage and transport casks, with fewer journeys needed to an interim storage, installation or permanent repository.
